Let’s talk about balance, having fun while moving and how that relates to neuroplasticity.
Neuro plasticity sounds like a big and complex word, simply put it refers to your brain’s ability to restructure or rewire itself. It can therefore continue developing and changing throughout life.
Neuro plasticity is incredibly important because it is at the root of essential human experiences. Learning and memory, important parts of what it means to be human, would not be possible without this process.
Balance and movement are key components to increasing our neuroplasticity. The more one engages in such activities the better.
I’ve worked with children most of my life and watch how much they move and how their movement comes from a place of curiosity and enjoyment.
Nothing fancy, from jumping, falling, balancing on one leg to hopscotch. These are just some of the ways kids are permanently engaging with and increasing their brain’s plasticity. We “lose” it as adults because we don’t use it. We mostly move from a place of should, because it healthy, its good for me, it will make me stronger, fitter. Recently I have been practicing moving from a place of play, curiosity and desire, not because I have to but because it feels good and I want to.
Movement is a medicine because continuous practice enhances our brains ability to relearn patterns and form new pathways to return to independence. Whatever your movement preference might be, yoga, boxing, running, swimming, do so from JOY. Your body is a wonderful vessel for you to explore and experience life.
Stay curious and see the magic.
